What counts as a reel

Every reel in the report is a public Instagram Reel from a public creator account. A reel enters the dataset only when its view count and length are valid and Outfame holds both its video file and its thumbnail, so every reel on the site can be played from Outfame's own media. Duplicates are removed.

Reels that hide their like count stay in for views and length and are left out of engagement metrics, instead of being counted as zero.

How each reel is labeled

Outfame's AI content models label each reel's niche, format and hook style. Each label comes from a fixed list, so a reel counts once in one niche, one format and one hook style. A new label value is added to the report only together with its written definition.

Length is measured in seconds and grouped into six bands: under 8 seconds, 8–15 seconds, 15–30 seconds, 30–60 seconds, 60–90 seconds, 90 seconds and longer.

How each metric is computed

Every number in the report is computed from these definitions, and the same code produces every page.

Views
The view count shown on the reel when Outfame analyzed it. It is a snapshot, not a final total.
Outperformance
A reel's views divided by the median views of all that creator's reels in the dataset. 1× means a typical reel for that creator; 2× means twice their usual. It needs at least 8 reels from the creator, so it compares creators of any size on one scale.
Engagement per view
(Likes + comments) divided by views, recomputed by Outfame for every reel. Reels that hide their like count are left out of this metric rather than counted as zero.
Views per follower
A reel's views divided by the creator's follower count at the time of analysis.
Engagement rate
For each creator, the median of (likes + comments) divided by followers across their reels. The report quotes the median across creators.

Sample-size rules

  • Every group statistic is a median, shown next to the number of reels behind it.
  • A table cell shows its metrics only with 20 or more reels. Smaller cells show a dash.
  • A hook or format gets its own page with at least 20 reels from at least 3 creators.
  • A niche gets its own page with at least 150 reels from at least 6 creators, and no single creator above 25% of its reels.
  • Hooks and formats are ranked only among groups that meet those minimums. Ties go to the larger group.
  • Sentences such as “1.2× more views” are computed from the data, never typed by hand.

What the data cannot tell you

  • The sample is 163 reels from 9 creators, so a few accounts can move a figure. Read every result as directional and check the number of reels beside it.
  • Views are a snapshot at analysis time. Newer reels have had less time to collect views; comparing each reel with its own creator's reels softens this but does not remove it.
  • The report covers public reels only. It cannot see saves, shares, reach or private account data.
  • A hook or format that performs well here is a pattern in this sample. It does not guarantee a result for any single reel.

Outfame analyzed 163 public Instagram Reels from 9 creators, published July 28 to October 27, 2026. Engagement per view = (likes + comments) / views. Niche, format and hook are scored per reel, and figures describe this sample. Data as of October 29, 2026.

Quick answers

What data is the Outfame Reels Report based on?

Outfame's own analysis of 163 public Instagram Reels from 9 creators. Each reel is classified by niche, format, hook style and length, and every figure in the report is computed from that set. Nothing is estimated from outside surveys.

How does Outfame classify a reel's hook and format?

Outfame's AI content models label each reel's niche, format and hook style from what the reel shows and says in its opening seconds. Each label maps to a fixed list, so every reel is counted in exactly one hook style and one format.

What does outperformance mean?

Outperformance is a reel's views divided by the median views of all that creator's reels in the dataset. A value of 2 means the reel got twice what that creator usually gets. It lets the report compare a small account and a large one on the same scale.

How often is the Reels Report updated?

The report is refreshed when Outfame adds reels to the dataset. The date at the bottom of each page shows the latest data release, and every count on the pages is read from that release, so the numbers stay consistent across the report.
