How to get your money back from a subscription

A service stopped delivering, went quiet, or kept charging after you cancelled. Start with the merchant, then go to whoever processed your payment. Six steps, in order.

The short answer

Ask the service for a refund in writing first and give it a deadline. If it does not answer or cannot be reached, dispute the charge with your card issuer, PayPal or the app store you paid through, cancel the subscription and block future charges. Keep every receipt and message as evidence.

Step by step

Six steps to a refund

  1. 1

    Gather your proof

Find every charge on your bank or card statement: the date, the amount and the merchant name exactly as it appears. Save the order confirmation, receipts, the plan you bought and every email or chat with support.

    • Screenshots of the service not working help: an empty dashboard, a login error, a site that no longer loads.
    • Write down when the service stopped delivering, as precisely as you can.
  2. 2

Check the refund terms you agreed to

Read the service's refund policy and terms of service, ideally the version that applied when you signed up (the Internet Archive at web.archive.org often has an older copy). Note any guarantee wording, such as a results promise, and what it asks of you.

  3. 3

    Ask the service in writing

Email support or use the in-app contact form, and keep a copy. Say what you bought, when, how much you paid, why you want the money back and what you expect: a full or partial refund to the original payment method. Ask for a reply within 7 days.

A refund request you can copy
Subject: Refund request for [plan name], order [number]

    Hello,

I subscribed to [plan name] on [date] and was charged [amount] on [date or dates]. [The service stopped delivering on [date] / I cancelled on [date] and was charged again.]

Please refund [amount] to my original payment method. I would appreciate your confirmation within 7 days.

    Account email: [your email]

    Thank you,
    [your name]
  4. 4

    Cancel and stop future charges

Cancel the subscription in your account even while you wait for an answer, and save the cancellation confirmation. If you cannot log in or the site is gone, ask your bank to block future payments to that merchant, or ask for a replacement card number.

  5. 5

Dispute the charge with whoever processed the payment

If the deadline passes without a refund, go to the company that moved your money and send it the evidence from step 1 plus a copy of your refund request.

    • Credit or debit card: call the number on the back of your card and dispute the charge as a service not provided, or as a recurring payment charged after you cancelled. In the US, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives credit-card holders 60 days from the statement that first showed a billing error to dispute it in writing; many issuers allow longer, so ask yours.
    • PayPal: open a dispute in the PayPal Resolution Center. PayPal allows 180 days from the payment date.
    • Apple App Store: request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
    • Google Play: request a refund from your order history on play.google.com.
  6. 6

    Secure your account

If you ever gave the service your password, change it and turn on two-factor login. On Instagram, open Settings, find Apps and websites, and remove any service you no longer use.

Mistakes that cost refunds

  • Disputing before you ask the merchant, when you can still reach it. Many issuers ask whether you contacted the merchant first.
  • Keeping on using the service after you dispute the charge, which weakens your case.
  • Waiting for months. Every payment method has a deadline, and older charges are harder to win.
  • Assuming cancelling refunds you. Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not return the last one.

Subscription refund FAQ

Can I get a refund if a subscription service stopped working?

Usually, yes. If you paid for a service that is no longer being delivered, ask the merchant first, then dispute the charge as a service not provided with your card issuer or payment app. Your evidence that the service stopped is what decides the case.

How long do I have to dispute a subscription charge?

It depends on how you paid. In the US, credit-card holders have 60 days from the statement that first showed the charge under the Fair Credit Billing Act, and many issuers allow more. PayPal allows 180 days from the payment. Act as early as you can.

Will cancelling get me my money back?

No. Cancelling only stops the next renewal. To get money back for a charge you have already paid, ask the service for a refund or dispute the charge.

What if the company does not reply?

Wait until the deadline you gave it, then contact your card issuer, PayPal or the app store with your evidence and a copy of the message you sent.

Do these steps work for Instagram growth services?

Yes. Instagram growth services such as Path Social, Plixi or Kicksta are ordinary subscriptions, so the same steps apply. Start with the provider's own refund terms and support team.

Does Outfame offer refunds?

Yes. If your follower count shows no net gain 30 days into a paid Outfame plan, you get your first payment back in full.

Replacing the service you cancelled?

Outfame grows Instagram accounts by engaging the followers of accounts and hashtags you choose, and logs every follow, like and story view in a live feed. It needs only your username, never your password. Go starts at $49 for the first month, and if your follower count shows no net gain 30 days into a paid plan, you get your first payment back in full. 65,000+ creators and businesses use it.
